August, the peak of summer in Japan, has brought the usual sweltering heat and humidity, accompanied by a vibrant array of fireworks displays and festivals across the country.

As we bid farewell to Summer and welcome Autumn, temperatures will begin to mellow, and the bustling crowds will gradually thin. September presents a perfect time to explore the ever-captivating Land of the Rising Sun.

Things We Love About Japan

Kakigori - shaved ice, a Japanese summer staple

Each edition we highlight a unique aspect of Japan that we adore.

Kakigōri (かき氷)

Japan is a country deeply influenced by its seasons, reflected in the unique culinary experiences at each time of year. In August, the peak of summer, the heat and humidity are at their highest. Festivals, called matsuri, abound during this time, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.

One of the most iconic summer treats in Japan is kakigōri. This shaved ice dessert, garnished with colourful syrups and sweet toppings, is a nostalgic favourite for many. A recent resurgence in popularity has seen specialised kakigōri shops popping up in cities across the country.

Kakigōri is a must try treat if you’re in Japan in the summer months.

Rolling like a local with Andy from DIG Tokyo Tours

In June, we had the privilege of joining Andy from DIG Tokyo Tours on a cycle tour of Tokyo’s backstreets. Having previously met Andy and seeing his passion for Tokyo, we were eager to experience the city through his local lens. The Japan Concierge team believes there's something pretty special about exploring a vibrant city like Tokyo on two wheels, just like the locals do.

Unlike many traditional sightseeing tours, DIG Tokyo Tours offers a more intimate and personalised experience. Instead of visiting mainstream tourist attractions, we pedalled through charming laneways and hidden corners of Tokyo's inner suburbs. As Andy puts it, it's a "jaunt" that allows you to truly immerse yourself in this awesome city.
