What to do when dining out at a sushi restaurant

While most people might think they know how to handle themselves around sushi , there are nuances that you may not be aware of when it comes to eating this Japanese delicacy

1.  Don’t wear perfume or scented products to a sushi restaurant as this overpowers the delicate flavours

2. Gari (pickled ginger) serves as a palate cleanser, not an accompaniment to sushi

3.  Use soy sauce sparingly, if at all. Dip fish side only - don’t dip the rice (this may take  some practice!)

4. Rubbing chopsticks together is considered impolite and suggests that the restaurant has provided inferior utensils

5. Don’t mix wasabi into soy sauce - just place a small amount on to the sushi or sashimi (if at all)

6. It is acceptable to use your hands to eat sushi if you prefer - but not sashimi (a small towel or shibori will be provided to wipe your hands)

7. Eat each piece of sushi in one bite - and enjoy!
