Tokyo's Top Luxury Hotels: A Few of Our Personal Favourites
Having visited and stayed at countless hotels across Tokyo, we're excited to share our top 10 Tokyo luxury hotel picks (in no particular order) with you! Tokyo's hotel scene is exceptional, mixing Japan’s famed omotenashi service levels with stunning design and authentic Japanese touches.
From peaceful retreats high above the city to modern takes on traditional Japanese inns, each hotel offers something unique, and we think these are some of the best places to stay in Tokyo.
Whether you want to spot celebrities at their favourite hideaways, experience architectural wonders, or be among the first to enjoy Tokyo's newest luxury hotel openings, our firsthand experiences will help you find your perfect Tokyo home base.
The Aman Tokyo: This hotel is top of the list for many of our clients and for very good reason. Occupying the top six floors of the Otemachi Tower, Aman Tokyo is the pinnacle of understated luxury in Japan's capital. The property embraces tranquillity and privacy, offering a serene sanctuary above the city and, unsurprisingly, is a popular hideout for celebs visiting Tokyo.
Aman Tokyo’s design draws inspiration from traditional Japanese residential structures, blending classic materials with modern technology. It's a warm and exclusive retreat in the heart of the city. The spa and pool are impressive – at 30-metres this is the longest pool in Tokyo. For travellers seeking refined sophistication, meditative spaces, and impeccable service, this property stands out as Tokyo's definitive luxury hideaway.
Janu Tokyo: We visited this newly launched property on a recent visit to Tokyo. As the world's first Janu hotel (sister brand to the prestigious Aman) it offers a refreshingly different experience. While Aman embraces tranquillity, Janu celebrates connection, community, and vibrant social interactions. Located in the dynamic Azabudai Hills creative district (home to teamLab's new Borderless exhibit), the hotel features an intentionally international design with minimal Japanese influences.
This luxury hotel offers eight different restaurant options and a high tea to die for, but the pièce de resistance is the state-of-the-art wellness centre – arguably the best in its class of any hotel in Japan, let alone Tokyo. This hotel’s location, fit out, and overall offering are second to none, and we have no hesitation in recommending this property if you are after the best new hotel in Tokyo.
The Palace Hotel: This stunning property overlooks the grounds of Tokyo’s impressive Imperial Palace and has some of the most unobstructed views in Tokyo. Stunning rooms, combine with outstanding service that is is both elegant and understated - which pretty much sums up the hotel in a nutshell. Despite the superb central location, guests have little reason to leave with several fine dining establishments on site, including an outpost of the coveted Sushi Kanesaka. On our most recent visit, we whiled away time at the discreet Royal Bar, famous for producing one of Tokyo’s finest martinis. We’re big fans of this hotel.
Hotel Okura Tokyo: Another iconic hotel, we managed to fit into our schedule on our recent Tokyo visit. The Okura is possibly one of the most culturally important hotels in Tokyo as one of the original western-style hotels built for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics but was totally rebuilt about 10 years ago. They have worked hard to stay true to its original charm with lots of mid-century references as well as still maintaining a strong sense of traditional Japanese atmosphere.
It's been thoughtfully rebuilt, but it still holds onto that classic, serene atmosphere. It's located in the Toranomon business district and offers a peaceful retreat. Plus, you're not too far from areas like Roppongi and Akasaka, known for their dining and nightlife. It's a great option if you're after a tranquil and understated experience. Here’s a blog post we wrote a little while ago about Toranomon Hills if you’re keen to learn more about the area.
Hoshinoya Tokyo: This hotel is beautiful, and it is a very special property. It’s basically a modern take on a traditional Japanese ryokan right in the heart of Tokyo. It has the most incredible rooftop onsen – the hotel is built on top of a natural hot spring. It’s really like stepping into another world.
We love how it offers a chance to experience Japanese culture in a modern, urban setting. Hoshinoya Tokyo is incredibly peaceful, and each floor even has its own lounge area with treats. Definitely, a unique and calming choice.
Andaz Tokyo: We love this hotel. It’s perfect for those who love a modern, stylish vibe with incredible views. Like the Okura and Toranomon Hills Hotel, it’s in the Toranomon Hills area. It’s a smaller hotel too, with only 3 floors of rooms – 50 floors up. Being so high up, the views of the city, especially of Tokyo Tower, are just awesome.
The Andaz offer a ‘cocktail hour’ every night, where guests can enjoy complimentary wine, beer and sake along with some small snacks and canapes. The stunning spa and pool are worth visiting as well. The Andaz is a sophisticated and comfortable choice with a real wow factor.
Hotel Toranomon Hills: We stay here a lot – it’s also on the smaller side and we like it for its straightforward elegance and how incredibly convenient it is, with direct access to the Hibiya line subway. You've also got a variety of dining and shopping options right there in the complex.
The breakfast is phenomenal and not to be missed. It’s one of the newest hotels on this list and is a bit of a hidden gem. It offers Andaz vibes (albeit without the pool, cocktail hour or views!) but at a more reasonable price. It's an excellent choice if you are after a contemporary feel, good value and location.
Park Hyatt Tokyo: This has traditionally been our favourite Tokyo property. It is currently undergoing an extensive renovation project, which is expected to be completed in October 2025. Once it reopens, it's sure to be a top pick again for those seeking a classic and sophisticated Tokyo experience.
It will be interesting to see whether they hold on to the ’90s aesthetic or opt for a whole new vibe. We expect demand to be high when it reopens and anticipate that there will be a bump in their rates, too. But no doubt it will be worth it.
The Capitol Tokyu: This is a firm favourite of ours and is a bit of a secret, as it is not very well known outside of Japan. Hidden alongside the vibrant Akasaka district, The Capitol offers a classic blend of Japanese aesthetics and modern finishes. It feels like an oasis when you walk in, calm and serene.
We love the overall chilled vibe of the hotel along with its central location next to the nightlife hubs of Roppongi and Shibuya. And in case there is any doubt that you are in Japan, it is metres away from the significant Hie Shrine. We think that this hotel offers guests the perfect combination of convenience, Japanese cultural experience, and luxury.
The Edition Ginza: Located in the heart of Ginza, you can’t get a better location if you are in Tokyo to shop. The Edition Ginza offers an upscale retreat with a serene garden and vibrant bars.
This hotel is uber-cool but with a very subtle hint of Japanese-ness about it. It’s minimalist and modern and gives off low-key party vibes. The rooms blend clean-lined aesthetics with Japanese finesse, offering a tranquil escape from the non-stop energy of Ginza.
Tokyo's luxury hotels keep getting better, with each property on our list offering its own special take on Japanese hospitality. While these ten are our current favourites, we're always discovering new gems across the city!
Your ideal Tokyo hotel might depend on where you want to be located, the style you prefer, how much Japanese culture you want to experience, or simply which property feels right for your travel style.
Do you need help in choosing the perfect Tokyo hotel? We would love to help. We can match you with the ideal property based on your preferences and help plan your entire Japan adventure. We'd love to hear from you!
