Marnie McLaren
Co-Founder and CEO The Japan Concierge
Marnie's connection to Japan did not begin at a single moment. It accumulated. A school trip as a teenager became a fascination that pulled her back repeatedly through her high school years. That fascination became a commitment: she spent a year in Japan as an exchange student, returned to live and work there during her university years, including a stint as a golf caddie, which remains one of the better ways to understand how Japanese society actually operates. Upon graduating, she moved back to teach English. By the time she left for the last time, she had lived in Japan for five years across multiple periods and spoken the language long enough to think in it.
It was that fluency, linguistic and cultural, that led to her being engaged as a translator for CBS at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. For most people, working at the Olympics would be the headline. For Marnie, it was simply the next thing Japan asked of her.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Asian Languages and Studies from the University of Queensland and has since completed the Japan Travel Specialist Advanced Master's Course, the most rigorous professional qualification available to travel advisers specialising in Japan. She has visited more than 40 countries, but Japan is the one destination she has never once felt she has fully seen.
Before founding The Japan Concierge, Marnie spent over a decade in financial services, including roles at JPMorgan Private Bank in London and as Head of Investment Research and Governance at BT, where she oversaw a $150 billion portfolio. The discipline of that work shapes how she approaches travel planning: methodically, with a high tolerance for complexity, and with a strong preference for getting things right the first time.
She founded The Snow Concierge in 2022 as a Japan ski specialist, and The Japan Concierge followed from the same conviction. Japan deserves more than a generic itinerary and a booking confirmation.
Marnie's expertise has been cited in Bloomberg, Travel + Leisure, and The Manual. She was also quoted in the Sydney Morning Herald on Japan travel planning.
